My daughter starts Kindergarten this year. We are already getting excited and starting to purchase school supplies. We live on a tight budget but I still believe we are blessed. We are able to buy my daughter what she needs. I know that others are in a position where even those items are a struggle. I know many parents who are worried about how they will afford all that their child needs to start school. They may even been in a position where they have to choose whether to pay a bill or get supplies. That is why I am proud to tell you about Bag It Forward.
Bag it Forward was created to help those need it this school year. No child should be embarrassed or not be prepared when they start school because they can not afford supplies. I bet if you think about it right now you can think of someone that may really be struggling to provide these items for his or her child. And if you can not think of someone I am certain you can find a local organization that is taking donations. Another great idea is to give to your church. There may be people at your church that your leadership knows about that can use the supplies. I have found the anonymous donations can many times be the most rewarding!
This year as we decided to start our shopping I wanted to teach my kids about giving. This can be done without talking about who has more or less money. Sometimes just say this is a gift that we want to give. With my daughter I did not make it about money. That is too hard for someone her age to understand. So we focused completely on the giving part of it! She was excited to give. Together my husband, myself and my daughter all thought of the perfect people to be the recipients! Then we went to Walmart to load up. We purchased all of the standard school supply items like Elmer’s Glue and Construction Paper. Take a look at my complete shopping trip via This Moment:
We choose not to show our giving as we would like to keep their identity private. However I can assure you that the money, time and love we put into this mission was well worth it! They needed these items. We all felt the gratitude they felt. As a mom I was glad that I could use this to teach my child how to give with a happy heart even when others do not ask for it. We discussed how to find a need and help fulfill that need. That is incredible and I hope that other moms can do the same!
