A few months ago I introduced you to Champions for Kids. They have a mission to help children everywhere by encouraging people everywhere. Each month they have a featured Simple Service Project. They challenge each of us to join in as a person, family, organization or community to help children in need. This month the mission is “Spin into Action.” It is all about helping kids smile brighter and have healthier teeth. I was thrilled to hear about this month’s project!
How it works: Gather your family, friends, and co-workers to provide toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other dental care items for children in your community! Give the dental care items that you collected to an organization in your community that serves children (like a school, religious organization, or nonprofit) so that kids in your community can celebrate with healthy smiles and happier lives! It is no secret that in America so many children are uninsured. Dental care can be far to expensive for families in this situation and therefore they have no choice but to avoid the dentist. There was a short time when my husband and I were both laid off and our kids did not have insurance. As a parent this is so upsetting. No matter how much you want to get them the preventative care or dental work that is needed, sometimes you just can not afford it. That is why these projects are so important to me. We do not have a lot now but we have enough and I want to share what we do have! I am sure many of you are in the same position. You do NOT have to have a lot to give a lot!
I wanted to show how even the smallest gift can make a difference. So my kids and I went to the local Walmart and did some shopping. You can see the complete shopping experience here. Keep in mind I did not spend a lot on my Spin into Action donation. I was still able to get some great oral care products that will help kids care for their teeth and gums.
One of the items I decided to get was the Spinbrush by Arm & Hammer. This toothbrush really impressed me. It has an on and off switch that activates the spinning bristles. I was so impressed by this that I got one for my husband since he has trouble with his teeth. They different styles that helped customized the need to the person. I got one of each so that the recipient can get what he or she needs. They also come in several colors which is great for kids.
In the end I decided to get items for pain and immediate care. Most of us know how painful a toothache can be. Imagine if you could not get treatment for it? For that reason I got pain gel to help with the immediate pain and issues. Then I got items to help remove any current plaque, gingivitis, etc. It is important to address the current problems. Lastly, I got preventative items to help for the future.
I already have an organization that I plan to donate these items to. They are a Charity that many of the community church’s work with. They are the only large organization in our small town. They help people who have immediate needs. I like that they verify the need immediately. They ask families to be specific in what they need and they help with that need. They do not hand out money they provide the need. So if a family can not pay a water bill they will call and verify and then pay that bill directly. If they family needs food they will give them the essential food items for the week. I really like that it is not money being handed out but rather the NEED! That is why this organization is perfect. I want these oral care items on hand for someone that comes in with this need! It will not go to waste but it will go to someone who needs it.
I will share with you as soon as I deliver this package to the charity. I have a few fun things I would like to throw in to make a couple baskets. I like making things pretty. Stay tuned to what happens.
For now I really hope that you will join in this project. Whether you do it alone or get the whole community together you CAN make a BIG difference! You can be the one to help keep a child healthy because he or she has clean and healthy teeth. You may never see this child but you can be confident that a child will be smiling brighter because of YOU! You can be One of Millions too!
