How To Make Handprint Heart Valentine’s Cards

My house was visited by the flu last week and let me tell you, that was a rough few days. Towards the end of the week I had a whole houseful of little people who still didn’t feel good but were sick of just laying around. I got all excited and got out the items we would need for this craft and it was met with ho-hum enthusiasm at best. Usually my kids love to cut, color and give stuff away but they just weren’t feeling it that day. I’m going to try this homemade Valentines for kids craft again with them a little closer to Valentine’s Day and maybe even bust out a little glitter for them to use as well and see if they get more enjoyment out of the craft then. It’s hard for mama’s to step back and just let whatever crafting is going to happen, happen sometimes. However, just because this craft was a flop for me doesn’t mean it will be for you! I’ve done this with a lot of little kids while I was taking some classes for Early Childhood Education and those kids LOVED it!.

Homemade Valentines For Kids: Handprints Heart Valentine’s Cards

  • Paper
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Markers or crayons, glue,¬†glitter whatever you want to use to decorate with
  • scissor

These are very simple and can be made by the whole family. We used brown paper bags because it matched the crafts that we have been doing for family, but please feel free to use brightly colored construction or even cardstock. You’ll need to trace around your child’s hand.

Cut it out just inside the tracing line all the way around the fingers AND the part inside the fingers and thumb. When you open it up you should have a heart shape in the middle of your handprints!

Let the kids color and decorate to their little hearts content! Hopefully you will have a more enthusiastic crowd than I did and they will actually do more than a couple of scribbles and call it good. :( Fold it in half and label it with a To/From and you’re all done.

No matter how crafty the kids get, this is such a cute craft that captures their tiny little handprints in this moment in time and everyone will love to get a set for their very own!
