How To Create A Low-Cost Cars Bedroom Theme

It’s no secret that Disney Pixar’s Cars franchise has been a major hit with kids. Merchandise from the series can be found in almost any toy or kids’ clothing store. Kids want to wear it, play with it, and eat from it. With rumors of Cars 3 circulating earlier this year, the franchise shows no sign of slowing down. If you’re looking to refresh your child’s bedroom with a new theme, you might want to consider a Cars theme. The merchandise is widely available, and with a little creativity, your child’s Cars-themed room can be a Pinterest-worthy surprise for your little one. Check out these ideas for creating a Cars bedroom your child will love.

How to Turn Your Child’s Bed into Lightning McQueen

The central item in any nursery or child’s room is the crib or bed. With a little imagination, you can make that central item even more impressive by turning it into a racecar. Car beds can be purchased of course, but if you’d prefer a more economical route, you can make a simplified car bed yourself.

Let Mater Rule the Walls

The walls in your child’s Cars bedroom are a blank canvas, waiting for you to create a Cars masterpiece, and painting the room yourself is an affordable option. Select classic race car colors such as hot rod red, silver and black, or have a talented friend paint a Cars mural. To add a little more of that automotive feel, purchase a roll of adhesive diamond plate wall border, an inexpensive set of Cars character decals or road decals. For a more vintage spin on Cars, you can look for antique car parts – hub caps and old license plates – or vintage automobile posters at Etsy, eBay, flea markets and antique stores. You might even find Mater’s license plate!

Curtains Can Double as a Racetrack Flag

Don’t forget about the windows! You can purchase Cars theme curtains, or you can sew (or not sew) your own nursery curtains out of black and white checkered flag material for a racetrack feel.

When the Bedroom Floor Looks Like a Race Track

The floor in your child’s bedroom can help to take your Cars theme up a notch. A Cars area rug can add some character, or for a less Disney, more classic touch, a city map rug can double as a design piece in addition to providing hours of fun for your little tyke. Another option for ambitious do-it-yourselfers is to do away with carpets and rugs altogether and paint the floor itself. Before you take on a project like that, however, be sure to do your research in detail and ensure your floor is suitable for painting. A simple design on the floor can pull your theme together in an amazing way. Every kid would be thrilled with a racetrack painted on their floor!

The Sky’s the Limit: Your Ceiling

The ceiling is an easy surface to overlook, but it’s ripe with design potential. It’s ideal for posters of Cars characters, classic retro automobiles or vintage car advertisements. While you don’t want to overdue your theme, a sky blue ceiling with clouds sponged on can make for a very cool atmosphere.

Two in One: Toys & Decor

Toys can be an essential part of bedroom decor. For infants, you could purchase a sweet little plush Lightning McQueen or Mater. Older children might enjoy a Cars Lego set or a collection of matchbox cars. Inexpensive Matchbox cars can also be found at thrift stores, garage sales and even antique stores (some classic collectibles will be a little pricier).

As you design, plan and create your child’s bedroom, remember you can’t do everything. While you want the perfect bedroom, overdoing it will create an overwhelming eye sore. Sometimes small touches add a lot. Start with the bedding and decorations in your plan, followed by a wall mural or an area rug. Don’t do both unless they are both overly simple. Whatever you do, have fun!
